A conversation between Cecilia Edefalk and Hilma af Klint 

Cecilia Edefalk is one of Europe’s most prominent painters. Her paintings often take their point of departure in real events, photographs, or objects. As she repeatedly lets long periods of time pass between her productive phases, a painting by Edefalk is a rare thing to come across. She has a close relationship with the world beyond ours. In fact, she regularly communicates with the other side. She has an ongoing conversation with human souls who have left our world. Nuda’s editor Astrid Birnbaum was curious about the whereabouts, the feelings, and thoughts of Hilma af Klint, who famously shared this connection with the spirit world. Af Klint’s most well-known body of work, Paintings for the Tempel, was commissioned by powers that she referred to as her High Masters. Her art was intended to lead the viewers onto levels of awareness other than those known from our ordinary life; to allow us glimpses of worlds beyond ours. Cecilia offered herself to pose the questions, formulated by Nuda, to Hilma af Klint. 

Are you surrounded by life, where you are now? Can you describe where you are?

Yes, there are lives, many spirits, old friends, mice too. They are common here, very cute, white fur balls, pink button noses. 

Can you describe your journey to the other side? Was it in any way painful, or did it create pleasure? Could you hear or see anything?

No, it didn’t feel like anything at all. Just a sigh of light. Everything went quickly and then it was done.

Can you describe what you look like? Do you have a body, and if so, does it look the same as when you were here among us? Does your senses function the same way, where you are now? Are you defined by your gender or sexuality?

Too long. Half is enough. The first half I look the same, just a little thinner, backlight takes its toll. There are no mirrors here, but overall it feels the same. Either way, it doesn’t matter. They should drop questions about sexuality. 

Do you have a possibility to create where you are now? Can you still find inspiration? Can you still use colors, forms, and beauty?

A larger view is difficult to reproduce. Uninteresting, even.

Is there something you could tell us about the place where you are now? Do you want to warn us about something, or give us some advice?

Everyone has different views on where we are going after this life, was it in any way similar to how you imagined it?

I didn’t want to think about it then. It came shockingly – sudden, I now imagine It will be good, just be calm, here it is nice and very green. Delightful. A green sky with pink dots, the color of the heart.
